Amy Lockhart was about to fall asleep. Her mind wandered to her usual thoughts: bringing back something from her dream and the meaning of life. She promised herself that tonight would be the night she would definitely bring back something from her dream.

She always wanted to be in a dream she could touch. She wondered if her life may already be this dream. Was reality really real? she wondered. Sometimes she felt hurt. Sometimes she was teased. Was that what made her life really real? She knew in her heart something was a little off, missing. The ultimate truth was missing! Where was she really and what was truly going on here on this so-called planet?

All the scientists had measured, looked, analyzed, but they all failed like characters in a frozen dream to prove one small detail: was it all really real to begin with?

“We are approaching a New Year…” Ms. Applewood said. “What would you like to accomplish this year?”

All the Elementrees’s hands went up excitedly as they all wanted to tell her their goals for the future.

On Friday, all the Elementrees arrived to class with toys for the charity event. These are the toys they each brought in:

Tommy Tomorrow: a small toy car.

Bobby Bishop: a toy tool belt.

Brenda Books: a coloring book and crayons.

Cleo Redding: a colorful necklace.

Cynthia Buttons: a doll.

Amy Lockhart: a superhero action figure.

Brian Glass: a ball.

Pete Moss: wood blocks.

Trudy Jones: a teddybear.

Abigail Abacus: a deck of cards.

When Santa arrived Friday morning, he was wearing his fuzzy red suit with the fluffy white cuffs. He had on a wide black belt. He had a big belly, rosy cheeks, white curly hair, and a white beard. He was wearing his red hat with the white puff ball at the end. He walked into Ms. Applewood’s class merrily saying “Ho! Ho! Ho!” and ringing sleigh bells.

“The winter holidays are upon us,” Ms. Applewood said to her third grade class. “Green Lawn Elementary School is participating in a toys for charity event. If you would like to participate, please bring a toy to class this week. Santa will stop by this Friday to pick up all the toys and bring them to the children in need in our community.”

“Hey, wait a minute!” Tommy Tomorrow said. “Doesn’t Santa have a shop for doing this kind of thing?”

The class laughed.

“Are the elves on strike?” Bobby Bishop asked.

A few students giggled.

“Are you sure we’re talking about Santa and not Scrooge?” Tommy wondered out loud.

There were some more chuckles in the room.

Brian Glass, Abigail Abacus, and Cleo Redding were hanging out at Cleo’s house one afternoon.

Abigail was experimenting with logic puzzles. Logic is a special way of thinking. She was interested in learning more about logic because math is based on logic and math is her favorite subject.

Her first logic puzzle was if A = B and if B = C, then A = C.

She wondered if logic could help her better understand the Universe. She began to think about the ocean. Then she thought about computers. Computers are based on logic. Some people believe logic can explain everything in the Universe, but she did not believe this.
