The Little Tomatillos food truck was parked on the same street as Mr. Grumble’s Gumdrop Shop. It was parked a block away from the Gumdrop Shop, but Mr. Grumble swore the music was so loud it made his store walls vibrate and that he could still hear the metal drum ringing in his ears as he fell asleep at night.

Mr. Grumble walked outside his shop and stood on the corner of the sidewalk, where Brush Street met Stephens Road. His store was officially on Stephens Road. Brush Street was the street where most of the Elementrees lived. He lifted his fist in the air and shook it toward the food truck. “Ice cream trucks go around once!” he shouted. “This truck parks outside my shop, plays this music all the way up, and never leaves! Darn nabbit!”

Amy Lockhart and her sister, Lizzie Lockhart, were rounding the corner and almost ran into Mr. Grumble.

“What’s going on, Mr. Grumble?” Amy asked him.

As the little pup began his chosen adventure, he smelled several scents in the air and heard a vague sound as well. It was the sound of raindrops dancing on a window. He remembered that sound from the first night he was born. He smelled the dirt below, the leaves above in the trees. He felt the cool air of early November. Then there was a scent similar to the scent of that mushy food Mildred gave him and his siblings the day before someone took away his brother. This food did not taste as good as his mother’s milk, but it was not half bad. The scent and musical sound came from the same direction. This is easier than I thought it would be, he thought.

Four Boston Terrier puppies were born in the home of an elderly lady named Mildred Mango. She was an accidental Boston Terrier breeder. She raised her two Boston Terriers, one boy, named Dapper, and one girl, named Sweetie, since the time they were pups, and she never spayed or neutered them.

Around the time when Mildred found out Sweetie was “with pups” was around the same time she was thinking of ways to supplement her social security income. She planned to sell each puppy for $300. Since there were four puppies total, this meant a $1200 bonus for her. When the pups were five weeks old, she advertised the pups for sale in the local newspaper. One family responded quickly and took a pup to their loving home. One of the three other pups left behind became anxious when he saw his brother leave and not return the next day.

“Have you seen our brother with the white patch of fur on the top of his head?” the anxious dog asked his sister and brother who were still with him.

“One Gooey Gumdrop, please,” Tommy Tomorrow said to Mr. Ed Grumble, who was standing behind the counter at the Gumdrop Shop, the penny candy store he owned.

“You know they come in a box,” Mr. Grumble replied frustrated as he placed both hands on the counter and stared into Tommy’s eyes. “Now, kid, you are testing my patience.”

“I didn’t know there was a test to measure patience,” Tommy said. “Is it like the Richter Scale that measures earthquakes?”

“Now you are opening up another can of worms!” Mr. Grumble said louder as his face turned red.

“Gummy worms!” Tommy said excitedly. Mr. Grumble had just reminded him of another great idea.

“I want some of those, too!” Bobby Bishop said quickly. He was standing next to Tommy.
