Chessboard

It was a rainy afternoon. All the Elementrees were in their homes.

Bobby Bishop turned to what he enjoyed doing most: playing chess. He had no one to play with so he played the game by himself. It was not easy to play himself because he always knew what he was thinking of doing next.

He placed the chessboard on the desk in his bedroom and began laying out the pieces.

In the game of chess, the white color always goes first. He began by moving a pawn into the D4 spot. He mirrored his action on the black side of the board, moving a pawn into the D5 spot. Then he brought out a knight on the white side and a pawn on the black side. He tried to not always mirror his actions to keep things interesting.

He continued to play like this until each side was left with one rook, one bishop, the queen, king, and four pawns. Bobby’s white king was left huddling alone in the D7 spot. The black rook and queen were adding tension to Bobby’s white king.

Bobby was so absorbed in his game that he did not notice part of his chessboard hanging off his desk. When he got up to go to the kitchen for a snack and drink, the chessboard flipped up into the air like a quarter and all the pieces flew everywhere.

Bobby did his best to collect the pieces and put them back where they were before. There was only one problem: his black bishop was missing. He looked everywhere in his room, but he could not find it.

Later, when he went to the bathroom, he noticed the bishop there. It was standing straight up on the black and white tiled floor, in what would be the B5 spot.

He placed the bishop back on the chessboard in the B5 spot. It was checkmate. His white king was captured. The black kingdom won the game. Bobby couldn’t believe it. He thought he was playing alone, but now wondered how alone he really was.

  1. I have lost many things in my life and then hoped and prayed to find them again. Most of the time this works. I once retraced my steps down a street to find a keychain that I loved: it was of Marvin the Martian. Once I lost a glove and some nice person placed it on top of a counter for me to find easier. I know someone that lost the back of an earring in her bedroom and later found it in the bathroom; that was the inspiration for this story.
