Cynthia Buttons had many talents, but her favorite special gift she told no one about: she could make anyone smile. She especially enjoyed taking frowning people and making them smile.
Her technique was simple. She would find a frowning person and just think, “I can make you smile at me.” Then, she would look at them for a few seconds as a smile would creep up the corners of her mouth. Before she knew it, they were smiling at her. It worked every time.
She found her first subject today as she was riding the monorail with her mother: A beautiful, young lady in a dress suit was standing in front of her in the same small train cabin with her. She was looking down, serious, even a little sad. Then Cynthia thought, I can make you smile at me, and held a small smile on her face.
This lady kept looking at the ground, not even at Cynthia. But Cynthia persisted. I can make you smile at me, she thought patiently as she held the joy in her face. Just before the train made its last stop for Cynthia and her Mom, the lady looked up into Cynthia’s eyes and returned a pleasant smile. She still had it. This was her secret gift. She could make anyone—anyone—smile at her!
